Case study
Stack Overflow had strong reputation-weighted curation and auditable provenance but was never decoupled from the attention market (ad-supported and venture-backed from its 2008 launch). When LLMs began answering its questions directly, readers took the compressed model answer instead of the curated community one, traffic fell sharply after 2022, and with no funding reserve it had nothing to ride out the shock. The case that shows curation and provenance are not enough without the funding principle, and Chapter 11’s worst case landing on a real curation layer.
