In early 2020 the CDC and WHO advised the public not to wear masks, bundling a genuine wish to preserve scarce medical masks with an early droplet-over-aerosol read of the evidence; on April 3, 2020 the CDC reversed to recommend cloth coverings as aerosol transmission became clearer. That is a field updating on evidence. The bridge zone shipped it as two confident slogans, “masks don’t work” then “masks work,” with the decoding key (the supply motive, the provisional evidence) stripped, so the reversal read not as science working but as experts lying or flip-flopping. The inversion regime operating on institutional credibility itself, and the case that did the most public-trust damage.
